Over the last couple of decades, we've increasingly become more and more reliant on the internet. Whether that's to earn a living, develop relationships, to shop or find information on just about anything. The worldwide web has become integrated with our very existence.
Unfortunately, the internet has offered sanctuary to those who wish to do us harm in various ways. We all take for granted the laws that govern us and help keep us all safe in the real world, however they are lagging behind and sometimes even non-existent in Cyberspace. This allows illegal actions to be carried out without accountability or any justice being served.
Online abuse is difficult to measure and this is largely due to there being very little in the way of legislation by government and by the Social Media platform companies.
Two forms of abuse which are on the increase are Harassment and Malicious Communications. Usually carried out behind the cloak of fake Social Media Profiles. Reporting these profiles to the respective host platforms is usually a waste of time and is seen as a grey area in criminal law, however these very profiles become a platform for which the abuse takes place. Reporting harassment emanating from fake profiles to the police can also be hit and miss and without evidence of the actual person behind the profile little can be done. There does not seem to be the appetite to combat this growing issue.
Here at Veterans Against Cyber Abuse (VACA) we've seen enough. We will no longer sit on the sideline and watch whilst these online bullies are getting away with destroying people's lives with online hate campaigns designed to destroy a person's reputation and/or livelihood. Using full and unbiased investigations with full due diligence, we will shine a bright light in these dark corners and those who wish to throw stones from glass houses.
